Once Upon a Time...

A group of friends were sitting around one night.  Conversation had drifted back and forth on many topics.  On a tangent, one of the friends mentioned how she regretted not having read those books assigned in high school.  Another commented on how he felt the discussions in high school had lacked depth and understanding.  The third was trying to figure out why they were talking about this.

The conversation continued, and the three began making a list of core books they felt everyone should read, a cheat sheet for becoming well-read in a year was started.  From this collaboration, an idea was born.

"I wish there was a young group of people that would read and discuss literary books," the first told her companions.  Thus, the Knoxville Book Club was born.

The Knoxville Book Club

The Knoxville Book Club was born out of the desire of three people to meet with other young people and read the classics and the modern classics and then discuss these books with others.  A way to meet people with similar interests and also to gain insight through new and different points of view.

The club tries not to limit itself to what English teachers consider redeeming, but also not to ignore the wealth of literature that exists.  Our selections are varied, we try to hit on as many genres as possible.  We've had our successes and we've had our failures, but all in the all the club has provided for good conversations and comraderie.

We're not Your Parent's Book Club

How We're Different:

1.    We meet at Rick's Place, which is a bar (Downtown West - check out our Join Us page for address).

2.    We meet on $1 domestic draft night.

3.    We try to appeal to a wide range of tastes, not limiting ourselves to just Science Fiction, Romance, Oprah, etc.

4.     The group, on the whole, is younger than your average book club, ranging from the mid-twenties to mid-thirties and most of us are professionals.

5.     We have fun!

Questions, Rants, Raves, Etc.
